MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A senior commander and so-called treasury minister for the Islamic State (ISIL) militant group was killed by an Iraqi sniper outside of Fallujah, a local news website said Wednesday.
"Today, a sniper soldier belonging to the 30th brigade was able to kill the ISIS [ISIL] so-called financial minister, known as Ibrahim Jassam Fazah, in the district of Fallujah," the brigade’s commander, Col. Jomah al-Jamili, told IraqiNews.com in an interview.
Fallujah, located 42 miles west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, is one of the largest cities in the Anbar province. In mid-July, Iraqi troops launched a major offensive to liberate Fallujah and Ramadi from IS militants.
The Islamic State took over large areas of Iraq and Syria in 2014. It declared a caliphate on territories under its control, and has committed multiple human rights atrocities in both countries.
