General Dunford, who has served as commandant of the Marine Corps for the last year, was confirmed without opposition just days before lawmakers leave for summer recess.
He will replace Army General Martin Dempsey, who is expected to step down in September.
Dunford, a four-star General, served as commander of US Forces Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014, and previously commanded the 5th Marine Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
During a confirmation hearing earlier this month Joseph Dunford told senators that Russia presents the greatest threat to US national security.
He said that Russia’s nuclear potential is big enough to threaten the sovereignty of America’s allies in Europe.
General Dunford also advocates the idea of sending lethal weapons to Ukraine.
