MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the Afghan Presidential Administration confirmed that the leader of the Afghanistan wing of the Taliban, Mullah Mohammed Omar, died in Pakistan in 2013.
“In view of the reports regarding the death of Mullah Omar and the resulting uncertainty, and at the request of the Afghan Taliban leadership, the second round of the Afghan peace talks… is being postponed,” the Pakistani Foreign Ministry stated on its website.
The statement also noted that Islamabad hopes that the Taliban authorities would stay engaged in peace process.
On July 7, Pakistan hosted a meeting between an Afghan government delegation and Taliban representatives. The new round of negotiations was scheduled for July 31.
The Taliban Group is known for its numerous terrorist attacks against officials and civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The group seeks to establish strict Sharia law in both countries.
