The IOC chose Beijing over the only other candidate city Almaty (Kazakhstan) during the committee’s 128th session in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia.

Beijing has become the first city to host both the Winter and Summer Olympics. In 2008, Beijing hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics.
In 2014, the Winter Olympic Games took place in Russia’s Sochi. The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in South Korea’s Pyeongchang.
