Cobain’s death has long been subject to scrutiny by those who believe that Love was involved in his death.
Cobain’s widow and their daughter have both written to the court asking for the photos to remain sealed, and the city is arguing against releasing them out of respect for the family’s privacy. Francis Bean Cobain has claimed she has long been the target of obsessed fans and that the release of the photos may make coping even more difficult for her.
"I have had to cope with many personal issues because of my father's death. Coping with even the possibility that those photographs could be made public is very difficult," Frances Bean Cobain wrote. "Further sensationalizing it through the release of these pictures would cause us indescribable pain."
She also wrote of an experience where a crazed fan broke into her home and hid for three days because he "believed my father's soul had entered my body.”
While Love has his suicide note, and has kept it out of the public eye, she says that neither she nor her daughter have ever seen the death scene photos.
Last year, Seattle Police released two photos from the crime scene that showed drug paraphernalia including a spoon and what appeared to be hypodermic needles on the floor.
