MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a rare warning to national law enforcement agencies of a potential attack with the use of drones, local media reported.
"Emerging adversary use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems [UAS] present detection and disruption challenges," the DHS intelligence assessment, issued Friday and obtained by CBS News, stated.
The department warned that the growing recreational and commercial use of unmanned aerial vehicles directly correlates with the rising trend of drone incidents over US airspace.
"While many of these encounters are not malicious in nature, they underscore potential security vulnerabilities… that could be used by adversaries to leverage UAS as part of an attack," the report continued.
The broadcaster adds that near-weekly DHS intelligence bulletins center around threats emanating from lone wolf sympathizers of the Islamic State extremist group.
The latest assessment, although it does not mention specific events, reflects the overall security challenge that drone technology presents to US national security.
