MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Monday report by Amnesty International comes days before the beginning of the one-year countdown for the 2016 Summer Olympics on August 5.
The report says the future Olympic capital is a "tale of two cities. On the one hand, the glitz and glamour designed to impress the world and on the other, a city marked by repressive police interventions," Amnesty's Brazil Director Atila Roque said.
As many as 244 deaths out of 1,519 – or almost 16 percent – were due to "resistance followed by death," the study shows. This ratio fluctuated between roughly 22 and 16 percent between 2010-2014.
According to the watchdog, Rio authorities have a pattern of blaming police killings on unavoidable violent confrontation even when there is none, shielding officers from criminal charges. Victims are said to be predominantly young black males from underprivileged backgrounds.
