Finding a new use for the Mistral helicopter carrier ships, built specifically for Russian military needs, might turn out problematic for France, Russia’s State Duma Defense Committee Member Franz Klintsevich told Ria Novosti Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Klemlin’s press service announced earlier on Wednesday the termination of the contract on construction and delivery of the Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Moscow. According to the statement, France has transferred the funds and would be able to use the warships once the communication devices installed on the vessels are returned to Russia.

“To be honest, I don’t quite understand, what they [France] are going to do with the two already built ships, which were designed specifically to carry Russian weaponry.”

According to the politician, “nothing else can be put there”.

In 2011, Moscow and Paris signed a 1.2-billion euro ($1.32 billion at current exchange rate) contract for the purchase of two Mistral-class vessels.

Paris suspended the contract in November 2014, saying it was due to Russia's involvement in the Ukrainian conflict. Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations.
