MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the Kremlin press service announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Francois Hollande had decided to terminate the contract for the construction and delivery of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Moscow.
"The initial price of the two ships was approximately 1.2 billion euro, the sum of money to be returned… will be lower since the financial commitments Russia had mobilized will be refunded in euro," Jean-Yves Le Drian told the local RTL radio station.
He added that the details of the refund would be discussed in the country’s parliament, since the agreement with Russia on the termination of the Mistral contract has yet to be ratified.
Paris suspended the contract in 2014, citing Moscow's alleged participation in the Ukrainian conflict as the reason behind the move. The Kremlin has repeatedly refuted the allegations.
