Rafah was heavily bombarded after an Israeli officer had been kidnapped and reportedly killed in the area.
"Apparently, during work [to remove debris from a home hit during last year’s airstrikes], an Israeli bomb detonated. As a result, four people were killed," Ashraf Kidra said.
All of the injured have been brought to hospitals, some of whom are in a critical condition, the spokesman added.
The Gaza Strip is one of the territories disputed by Israel and the the Palestinians, who seek to include the territory in its independent state. Israel does not recognize Palestine as a political entity, and claims the Palestinian territories are occupied lands.
Meanwhile, the State of Palestine has been recognized by 135 of the 193 United Nations member states.
