Relations between Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama deteriorated amid negotiations over the Iranian nuclear deal, signed by Tehran and six world powers, including the United States, in July. The Israeli prime minister has repeatedly labeled the agreement "a historic mistake."
"I am very concerned about the battlefront that opened up between Obama and Netanyahu, and its impact on relations with the United States," Rivlin told Ma’ariv newspaper.
On July 14, 2015, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries comprising the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany, reached a comprehensive nuclear agreement to guarantee the peaceful nature of Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
Israel has vigorously opposed the deal, claiming that Tehran intends to use the money it receives from the lifting of sanctions to support terrorism in the Middle East.
