French President Francois Holland’s final decision not to deliver Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Russia will harm Paris’ relations with Moscow, Member of the European Parliament Aymeric Chauprade said Thursday.

PARIS (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, Paris and Moscow terminated the contract for construction and delivery of two Mistral-class warships.

Paris said that Russia would receive the whole price it paid for the ships. France will be able to use the vessels as soon as the Russian equipment on the Mistrals is removed, according to the Kremlin.

"Hollande’s decision would hardly honor the word of France, and is very harmful to our relations with Russia, as well as to our credibility in the trade relations with other countries," Chauprade told RIA Novosti.

'Scandalous' Mistral Non-Delivery: Hollande Chooses to Be 'Good US Friend'
France must restore "the quality partnership" with Russia, a key player in the balance between Europe and the world, Chauprade added.

Russia has been playing an integral role in counterbalancing the United States, which has long dominated the world and subordinated its allies, the lawmaker stressed.

Russia and France signed the agreement for the purchase of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers in 2011. Paris suspended the contract in 2014, citing Moscow's alleged participation in the Ukrainian conflict as the reason behind the move. Russia firmly denied the claims.
