WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On July 22, the White House announced it is finalizing the draft plan to close the infamous Guantanamo prison facility.
“Congress has left for the August recess, and it is unlikely that we will be in a position to provide that plan to them when they are not in session in Washington, DC.”
Earnest said that work on the proposal continues and involves consultations with the US Department of Defense and intelligence community.
The press secretary also noted that there is no specific timeline for the release of the prison closure plan at this point.
In January 2009, Obama signed an order to shut down the Guantanamo prison, following allegations that detainees were subject to human rights violations, only to sign legislation in 2011 that, in part, hampered the transfer of prisoners.
In 2015, the Guantanamo prison population has been reduced from 127 to 116, according to the White House.
