MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday, UK media carried the story of a Sudanese undocumented migrant, who was detained by UK police almost at the end of the Channel Tunnel on the British side earlier this week. He is believed to have walked almost entire 31-mile length of the tunnel from France on foot. The incident prompted authorities to undertake a review of existing security measures.
The infrequency of nighttime train services in the tunnel increases migrants' chances of crossing to the United Kingdom, giving rise to the initiative to close the route during such hours.
The crisis in Calais has escalated in recent weeks, with thousands of undocumented migrants trying to enter the United Kingdom through the Channel Tunnel. The attempts have resulted in several migrant deaths and severe traffic disruptions.
