The US is continuing to use the argument of the Iranian threat to Europe, and cannot acknowledge that its missile shield in Europe is targeted at Russia, Alexei Pushkov said.

The US is attempting to justify the deployment of its missile defense systems in Europe with the Iranian issue while the shield is actually targeted against Russia, Russian Lawmaker Alexei Pushkov claims.

"The US is clinging to the 'argument' about the Iranian missile threat to Europe. Otherwise, it would have to acknowledge that its European missile shield is targeted at Russia. But that’s clear anyway," Pushkov wrote on his Twitter page.

On August 7, the US State Department said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had twisted facts in his comments on President Barack Obama’s statement about the anti-missile system in Europe.

Earlier, Lavrov had commented on a statement he had made in 2009. At that time, the US president had said an agreement on the Iranian nuclear dossier would make the US missile shield in Europe unnecessary. The State Department stated that the final agreement on Iran reached in July did not change the situation, as the US has other threats to counter.
