The United States is confident that the Iraqi justice system will fairly try the wife of a senior Islamic State leader after she was transferred from US custody, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a press briefing.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Umm Sayyaf, the wife of senior Islamic State leader Abu Sayyaf, who was killed in a US special operations raid in Syria in May, was transferred to the custody of the Iraqi government, the Pentagon announced.

“We have a firm belief that in the context of the Iraqi criminal justice system she will be held to account for her crimes.”

Ernest confirmed that US personnel interrogated Sayyaf and received useful intelligence before handing her over to Iraqi authorities.

Sayyaf had taken part in several terrorist activities and was involved with her husband in holding hostage US citizen Kayla Mueller before she was killed.

“The decision to transfer Umm Sayyaf to the Iraqi government is based on a unanimous interagency consensus that the detainees’ transfer would be appropriate with respect to legal, diplomatic, intelligence, security, and law enforcement considerations.”

Sayyaf was handed over to the Iraqi government because she is an Iraqi citizen.
