MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The announced protest is believed to be inspired by discussions on Polish internet forums over people blaming immigrants for Britain's economic problems.
The Polish Express newspaper, the widest-circulation Polish language newspaper in Britain, has backed the unofficial strike, creating a Facebook group to promote the event. A special T-shirt in Polish colors — red with white caption "Enough! Stop blaming us" — is made and sold for this event.
"It’s just a way to show people in the UK that immigrants are an important part of Britain. We want to make the point that we are here and that we want to feel appreciated," Kowalski was quoted as saying by The Independent.
Within the Britain's Polish community, opinions about the protest are divided.
"This is not the sort of thing we would be inclined to support for the simple reason it might be more detrimental to individuals with repercussions from employers, than any advantage that could be gained," Tadeusz Stenzel, chairman of the Federation of Poles in Great Britain was quoted as saying.
According to UK government data, over half a million Poles work in Britain.
