A Russian Navy fleet is expected to cross Iranian territorial waters and berth off the country’s coast on Sunday, IRNA reported.

The expedition is meant as a sign of “peace and friendship” and is designed to strengthen mutual trust and friendly relations between the countries.

The ships are expected to berth in Iran’s fourth naval zone on August 9. The commander of the fleet will reportedly visit the Northern Gilan province and meet with local political and military authorities.

The Russian Navy fleet has already entered Iran’s territorial waters two times with similar expeditions: in 2007 and 2014. Both of them were aimed at strengthening friendly ties and cooperation between the countries. The latest visit will be the third gesture of friendship over the past 8 years.

In 2013, the Russian fleet and the ships of other Caspian states carried out friendly expeditions four times. The Iranian ships berthed at Russia’s Astrakhan Port in August 2013.
