MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday, Christian Taylor, an African-American 19-year-old college football player, was killed by a white Arlington police officer in the southern state of Texas after his sports utility vehicle crashed into a car dealership.
A special FBI agent in charge of the Dallas field office would take part in the probe, Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said in a news conference.
The move "in no way diminishes… confidence" in local officers, he stressed.
"The facts available today do not answer all questions," Johnson said.
The death of Taylor is another in a row of high-profile police shootings across the country over the past year.
Earlier in the day, the Washington Post revealed that the death of Christian Taylor had brought the number of shooting victims at the hands of law enforcement to 858.
Last year, the unrelated killings of unarmed African-American young men, Eric Garner and Michael Brown, by white police officers sparked an international outcry and led to nationwide protests against racism and abuse of authority by police.
On August 9, the US city of Ferguson, Missouri commemorates the first anniversary since Michael Brown was shot and killed by white police officer Darren Wilson.
