The annual anti-internment parade marks the anniversary of the introduction of imprisonment without trial by the local government that was supported by the British government of Edward Heath in 1971. This controversial policy was abandoned in 1975.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Belfast police were attacked on Sunday after deploying watercannon against protesters participating in an anti-internment parade, local media reported Sunday.

"Police came under attack after stopping a contentious republican parade from entering Belfast city centre… Officers were forced to deploy water cannon an hour after paraders dispersed when a crowd threw petrol bombs, stones and bottles at them," The Irish Times said.
