The 16th FINA World Aquatics Championships ended on Sunday in Kazan, the capital of Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan.

KAZAN (Sputnik) – The closing ceremony, held inside the TatNeft Arena, kicked off with the parade of 190 participating national team flags.

In the 100-meter freestyle final, Sergei Fesikov out-touched German swimmer Steffen Diebler by 0.11 split seconds. - Sputnik International
Russian Swimmers Win Three Gold Medals on First Day of FINA World Cup

An estimated 2,500 athletes took part in the July 24-August 9 competition.

Out of a total 75 gold medals awarded, China came away with 15, followed by the United States at 13, and Russia rounded out the top three with nine gold medals.

FINA President Wants 2020 World Swimming Champs in Sochi

The International Swimming Federation’s flag was handed to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as the head of the world championship’s upcoming host nation in 2017.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Orban praised Russia for setting a high standard in organizing the event and pledged to maintain it at the 17th championship in Budapest.
