KOROLYOV (Moscow region) (Sputnik) Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko have opened the hatches of the Russian Zvezda module and begun works on the outside of the International Space Station (ISS), a spokesman for the RKA Mission Control Center said Monday.

"The estimated duration of the work outside the station is six hours and 28 minutes," the spokesman said.

The cosmonauts' tasks include cleaning the module's portholes, photographing the Expose-R research facility, dismantling a sensor for the Obstanovka space experiment, as well as installing handrails and antenna fasteners on module.

Padalka, a record-setter at over 840 days spent in space, and Kornienko are also due to collect wipe samples from solar panels and perform other maintenance work.

Padalka logged a total of 33 hours and 4 minutes in nine overall spacewalks and is expected to set another record at 878 days off Earth when his mission ends in September.

Kornienko previously performed one nearly seven-hour spacewalk as part of the ISS Expedition 23/24.
