“As the country has slowly shifted away from this position, the percentage saying immigration levels should increase has doubled — from 12 percent in June 2002 to 25 percent today,” Gallup said.
Some 40 percent of US citizens still say they believe immigration levels should remain the same, while 34 percent believe the United States should decrease the number of immigrants it allows in the country, according to the poll.
The poll, conducted between June 15 and July 10, 2015, featured an increased sample of African Americans and Hispanics.
Hispanics in the United States, the poll showed, were the biggest ethnic group saying immigration levels should be increased.
Gallup also noted that three-fourths of US citizens believe immigration to the United States is a positive thing.
On June 4, 2015, the Pew Research Center released a poll showing 72 percent of US citizens believing illegal immigrants should be given legal status in the United States.
