MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Leader of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party Salih Muslim Muhammad discussed joint anti-ISIL measures on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
During a meeting, the officials talked about the ongoing Syrian crisis, according to the statement.
"Special emphasis was made on the realization of the Russian proposal on creation of a broad anti-terrorist front to counter the global IS threat, with the participation of the Kurdish self-defense groups," the statement read.
In late June, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the Syrian leadership join forces with regional countries, such as Turkey, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, to fight ISIL.
ISIL extremist group has seized vast territories in Syria and Iraq in recent years. An international US-led coalition has been launching airstrikes against ISIL positions in both countries without approval from Damascus.
