As most Americans wished former US President Jimmy Carter well following an announcement on Wednesday that he has advanced cancer, Fox News went a different route, throwing punches at the 90-year-old from Georgia. Twitter was not amused.

In a statement posted to his foundation’s website, Carter revealed that during surgery to reveal a mass in his liver, it was discovered that the cancer had spread, and that he was seeking treatment.

“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week,” Carter’s statement read.

Most across the political spectrum expressed support and well wishes for Carter and his family, but the ever-classy Fox News opted to throw in a dig about his one-term presidency, from 1977 to 1981.

In response to the rather tastelessly timed tweet, the network received a massive display of outrage, disappointment, and disgust.  Other than a tweet complaining about affirmative action, nearly all of the flood of tweets responding to theirs were negative.

Following his presidency, Carter launched the Carter Foundation, which aims to support and advance human rights.

In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Prize for his work "to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development" through the non-profit foundation.
