MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia’s public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor has banned the import of sprat from Poland amid numerous law violations, including product label discrepancies.
The ban comes into force on Friday, according to a statement released by Rospotrebnadzor on Thursday.
It is being introduced after it was revealed that the information listed on the labels of Polish canned sprat does not correspond to the content of the product.
Latvian Agricultural Minister Janis Duklavs estimated in June 2015 that his country’s fishing industry could sustain losses of up to $225 million in missed exports to Russia.
The import bans come amid Moscow's food embargo imposed against countries that have targeted Russia with sanctions over its alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree authorizing the destruction of food imports under the embargo starting from August 6.
