During his recent visit to MEPhI's engineering center, the famous US actor said he wanted to become the "face" of the Russian binocular and help to promote the product around the world.
Currently, the binocular, codenamed Farvision, is being produced in small batches by a company in Sergiyev Posad, not far from Moscow.
"Sergiyev Posad historically had a good school of optometry. The engineering center brought technology up to Russian and foreign standards," said Dmitry Mikhailov, the director of MEPhI's engineering center.
Farvision is a relatively-lightweight binocular that uses mechanical stabilization (with no batteries), giving a user a perfectly-stable hand-held 25-times magnification view. The key advantage of Farvision compared to other models is that the binocular gives a stable image even when used from a moving platform, such as a vehicle, boat or aircraft.
In Russia, Farvision is mainly used by hunters, travelers, security companies and athletes. Russia has already agreed to start sales of the binocular in Angola; currently, negotiations ar being held with Bahrain, Turkey, Spain and China.
