Israeli government approved on Sunday an blueprint for increasing the amount of natural gas production from the major gas fields off country's Mediterranean coast, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The new blueprint stipulates increasing the amount of natural gas production from the Tamar natural gas field, as well as the rapid development of natural gas in the huge and promising Leviathan field, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The new plan also includes intensified gas production at Karish and Tanin fields, the latest in a series of the most recent discoveries in the eastern Mediterranean.

Shortly after the decision was made, Israeli opposition leader Isaac Herzog was quoted by the media as saying that he would overhaul the gas plan if he were the head of the cabinet.

Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the country had reached a deal with a consortium of US natural gas exploration and production company Noble Energy and Israeli energy conglomerate Delek to develop the Leviathan.

Currently, the Leviathan gas field, first drilled in 2011, is one of the largest young gas reserves in the world. According to the US Geological Survey, Leviathan’s volume of undiscovered reserves amounts to some 3,450 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.
