MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The newspaper quoted unnamed US officials as saying that "the American warning, which was delivered to Chinese officials in recent weeks and demanded a halt to the activities, reflects escalating anger in Washington about intimidation tactics used by the agents."
"Chinese law enforcement agents covertly in this country are part of Beijing’s global campaign to hunt down and repatriate Chinese fugitives living abroad and, in some cases, recover allegedly ill-gotten gains. The Chinese government has officially named the effort Operation Fox Hunt," the New York Times said on Sunday.
Many of the immigrants, which China wants to be returned home, are wanted on corruption charges.
The newspaper noted that the Chinese secret agents arrive in the United States with business and tourist visas, and that they use various methods to convince immigrants to return home, including turning to violence.
The US warning to Beijing came on the eve of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the United Stated which is scheduled for September. It is expected that the Chinese leader will meet with the US president in Washington, as well as to participate in the session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
