BALI (Sputnik) — On Sunday, a train crashed into a vehicle at a railroad crossing in East Java. The vehicle attempted to cross the road despite a railway guard’s warning and a siren signal of a forthcoming train, the Indonesian newspaper said.
According to local police, the crash claimed the lives of five passengers of the car, all members of the same family. Two other children in the vehicle were critically injured.
In the second separate accident, three children were fatally run over by a train as they were playing on the tracks, the newspaper said.
According to the ASEAN-Japan Transport Partnership data, over 70 accidents at railway crossings take place in Indonesia every year due to badly maintained trains and a lack of investment in rail infrastructure, including boom gates and crossing guards.
