UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — On Saturday, The New York Times reported that telecommunications company AT&T was providing the US National Security Agency (NSA) with technical assistance in spying on the world body’s communications for nearly a decade.
"The United States authorities had previously given us assurances as to the fact they are not and were not monitoring our communications," Maestracci told reporters.
According to her, the intergovernmental organization, nevertheless, is set to step up data security in its headquarters.
"We obviously have security and safety measures in place including through… our information and technology department. We are looking at this and how best to respond," Maestracci emphasized.
In its article, The New York Times cited documents, provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
According to the Snowden documents, leaked over the weekend, AT&T installed surveillance equipment in at least 17 of its US-based internet hubs.
