MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian Pacific Fleet's missile and anti-submarine ships will this week begin artillery drills in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, an Eastern Military District spokesman said Tuesday.
"This week, missile boats, antisubmarine ships and minesweepers of the Kamchatka raid group will enter Avacha Bay," Capt. 1st Rank Roman Martov said.
On August 13, missile divisions with more than 300 military personnel from Russia's Pacific Fleet's Kamchatka Coast Guard were placed on high alert to ready for live-fire exercises of the Redut and Rubezh missiles.
The Pacific Fleet, based in Russia's Far East, is one of five Russian fleets. A recent Russian Maritime Doctrine amendment lists the Pacific region as an area of increased strategic importance to Russia.
