According to The Guardian, protesters at Waterloo station in London are set to distribute fliers calling for a return to public ownership of the railway network, indicating the cost of their privatization.
"Rail fares have rocketed over the last five years, leaving many commuters seriously out of pocket. If ministers really want to help hard-pressed commuters they need to return services to the public sector," Frances O’Grady, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said, as quoted by the newspaper.
According to a report by Action for Rail, limiting annual rises in regulated fares could cost British taxpayers some $1 billion over the next five years should, while the price of season tickets could brought down by 10 percent by 2017 if the public sector ran train services.
Two of the candidates in the Labour leadership race, Jeremy Corbyn and Andy Burnham, have vowed to renationalize the railways should they become party leader in September.
