On Monday, Minister of Environmental Protection Chen Jining was cited by Xinhua announcing a clean air plan "integral to the success of the parade and the overall image of the capital city."
The outlet cites Vice Mayor of Beijing Zhang Gong saying that over 10,000 factories will either temporarily shut down or reduce production, and nearly 9,000 construction sites will stop nationwide during the week between August 28 and September 4.
Major air pollutant emissions cuts are hoped to reach 40 percent in Beijing and 30 percent in other regions, according to the deputy mayor.
The news agency cites a Ministry of Environmental Protection official saying that about 15 ministry teams will inspect major polluting factories.
The Berkeley Earth non-profit climate research organization study calculated recently that air pollution in China kills 1.6 million people a year, or 4,000 a day, and accounts for 17 percent of China’s total deaths.
