BEIJING (Sputnik) – Twin explosions at industrial warehouses in Tianjin late on Wednesday left 114 dead, hundreds injured and scores missing. Dangerous levels of highly toxic chemicals were found in the ground and waste water.
"Yang Dongliang is suspected of severe violations of discipline and law, he is currently being checked," the CCDI statement said.
The man served as the vice-mayor of the port city of Tianjin from 2001 to 2012.
The CCDI will first conduct an investigation within the party and then will make a decision on whether to pursue the case in court.
The probe was launched amid media reports of safety violations in the aftermath of the explosion in Tianjin.
