Undocumented migrants who are of the Muslim faith do not seek to settle in Slovakia, preferring instead countries with large Muslim communities, a spokesman for Slovakia's interior ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) On Wednesday, the Slovakian government announced that it would take in 200 Syrian refugees as part of an EU migrant relocation program, stressing, however, that they must be Christians.

"Illegal migrants who profess Islam mainly use the territory of Slovakia as a transit point, rushing from here to the states of Western Europe, where there are large Muslim communities," Ivan Netik told RIA Novosti.

According to Netik, Slovakia is not attractive to Muslim migrants, as there is practically no Islamic community and no mosques in the country. It is estimated that the country is currently home to less than two million Muslim citizens.

The spokesman stated that the first Syrian families are due to arrive in Slovakia by the end of this year.

Europe is currently facing a major migrant crisis, as thousands of people from North Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea to escape conflicts and economic hardship at home.

In May, the European Commission proposed a quota system for EU member states to evenly redistribute refugees throughout the bloc based on social and economic indicators for each member state. Slovakia, along with several other European nations, rejected the quota system, agreeing to a voluntary system instead.
