ROME (Sputnik) – Europe is in a “terrible state” and it needs to adjust in order not to “die of starvation,” former president of the European Commission Romano Prodi said, as cited by the Avvenire newspaper Thursday.
“In my opinion, Europe is in a terrible state. None of the important problems have been addressed with the European spirit — neither Greece, nor immigration,” Prodi said, as cited by the media.
Prodi also condemned European leaders’ inability to plan ahead. According to Prodi, EU summits, in their current format, are insufficient, as they only deal with immediate issues and ignore the future.
Europe should hold a summit involving the countries of the EU, the European institutions and most major political parties, Prodi said.
The European Union is currently facing two major problems, the migrant crisis and the financial crisis in Greece, which almost led to a Greek exit from the eurozone.
