MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Haaretz newspaper said that the Israeli army responded with artillery fire after four rockets which were fired from Syria hit the Israel's north, while the Israel Air Force also struck Syria in response.
Earlier in the day, four rockets fired from Syria hit the north of Israel near the Lebanese border. No casualties were reported, and it remains unclear who fired the rockets.
Haaretz quoted the Israel Defense Forces spokesman as saying that "the [Israeli] army sees Syria as responsible for the fire, and it will pay the price for it."
The newspaper also noted that the Israeli defense establishment considered attacks coming from Syria being terrorist attacks with Iran being behind them.
Thursday's shelling is the first time since the 1973 Mideast war that rockets from Syrian territory have slammed into Israel.
