Cooperation between Moscow and Washington is possible in case both parties show the willingness, US presidential candidate Rick Santorum told Sputnik on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Relations between Moscow and the West deteriorated significantly in 2014 after Crimea voted to reunite with Russia, and military clashes escalated in southern Ukraine.

The United States and its allies imposed sanctions against Russia over Moscow's alleged role in the Ukrainian conflict — a claim that Russia has repeatedly denied.

“Russia is a country that has a capability of cooperation, but right now I think it needs to be from both sides,” Santorum said.

When asked whether there are any potential areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, he said, “I hope so.”

The two nations continue to cooperate in some areas, including counterterrorism and resolution of the Syrian crisis.
