"I have no doubt that, if our ministers' schedules allow it, a meeting will be held. Lavrov and Kerry are holding a record number of meetings, I think, in the history of our bilateral relations," Zakharova told RIA Novosti.
The top diplomats frequently hold meetings and have telephone conversations to discuss pressing global issues and questions related to Russian-US relations.
The last time Lavrov and Kerry met was on August 5, on the sidelines of the annual Southeast Asia countries' ASEAN forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The diplomats discussed progress in the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
The situation in Ukraine became a wedge between Moscow and Washington, leading to the deterioration of their bilateral relations in 2014. The Unites States accuses Russia of participating in the Ukrainian conflict, a claim Moscow has firmly denied. Together with the European Union and some other allies, Washington has imposed several rounds of economic sanctions against Russia.
Washington has stated that the two nations can still cooperate on a number of issues, despite disagreements on the Ukrainian conflict, while Moscow has expressed readiness to continue cooperation, but on terms of mutual respect.
