BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — On Thursday, Tsipras announced his resignation to clear the way for early general elections in a bid to secure support for his stand on the new 86-billion-euro ($95-billion) bailout package, approved last week.
"The Commission respects the decision of Prime Minister Tsipras to go to the polls swiftly. For us this was not a surprise… We expected it," Breidthardt told reporters.
The spokeswoman underlined that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Tsipras have been engaged in regular contact.
