MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Thursday, Macedonia announced a state of emergency on its northern and southern borders as the southern European republic grapples with an influx of refugees fleeing conflicts and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa.
"The police officers were deployed on the field near the border with Greece and are acting… to protect the state border and ensure the peace and security…. allowing an entry of limited number of undocumented migrants from the most vulnerable categories in order for them to be treated properly in accordance with the country's capacity," the ministry said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) aid organization reported that some 3,000 refugees had gathered at the Greece-Macedonia border.
In recent months, Europe has been facing a massive migration crisis, as thousands of people flee conflict-torn regions of the Middle East and North Africa.
