MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Thousands of people took to the streets of Guatemala City demanding that Perez to step down, as he was accused of being involved a massive corruption scandal.
"My conscience is clear," Perez said in a televised statement Sunday, adding that he had received no money for the fraud the prosecution linked him to, as quoted by La Prensa daily.
The country’s prosecution said earlier that it had uncovered evidence that Perez and then-Guatemalan Vice President Roxana Baldetti were involved in a scheme reducing customs taxes of importers in exchange bribes.
The revelations led to Baldetti’s resignation in May, and she was arrested on Friday.
