TOKYO (Sputnik) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will not be attending China’s victory parade commemorating the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday.
"The decision was made taking into the account the parliament’s timetable," Suga said during a press conference.
Chinese authorities have already been notified of the decision, Suga said.
According to the NHK broadcaster, Abe said earlier he would attend the event on the condition that it was reconciliatory in nature and not anti-Japanese.
On September 3, China will mark 70 years since the surrender of Japan in World War II. In total, delegations from 30 countries are expected to attend the anniversary parade in Beijing.
