MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's Northern Fleet has started its first exercise to defend an important industrial facility in the Arctic, the fleet's spokesman said Monday.
"Today, a tactical exercise of the forces and troops of the Northern Fleet began in the Arctic. The drill takes place on the Taymyr Peninsula near the city of Norilsk," Capt. 1st Rank Vadim Serga said.
The exercise is aimed at coordinating the interaction of various services, as well as assessing the readiness of personnel and equipment to operate on unfamiliar Arctic terrain, according to the spokesman.
