German Air Force fighters will guard Baltic airspace beginning Tuesday, taking over from the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) under regular NATO rotation, the Latvian Defense Ministry said in a statement Monday.

RIGA (Sputnik) — The rotation happens every four months according to the ministry, who added in a statement that the ceremony to acknowledge the handover of responsibility was held earlier on Monday. Four UK RAF Eurofighter Typhoon jets have been guarding Baltic airspace since May 2015.

The Baltic countries do not have aircraft fit for air patrol in service with their armed forces.

NATO member countries have provided airspace patrol for the Baltic States since Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined the alliance in 2004.

The NATO aircraft are stationed at the northern Lithuanian Zokniai airport and at the Estonian Amari Air Base.
