US Has No Intention to Reopen Embassy in Iran

US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby says Washington has no plans to reopen the US embassy in Iran amid the comprehensive deal on the Tehran nuclear program reached in July.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington has no plans to reopen the US embassy in Iran amid the comprehensive deal on the Tehran nuclear program reached in July, US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby told journalists on Monday.

On Sunday, the United Kingdom reopened its embassy in Tehran, four years after it closed the diplomatic mission.

"The decision to restore diplomatic relations — that’s a sovereign decision made by states in this case the United Kingdom, they did that by reopening their embassy. For the United States, we have no intention to do that," Kirby said.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond who attended the ceremony in Tehran has become the first top British diplomat to visit the Islamic Republic since 2003.

The Iranian embassy in London also resumed its work at on Sunday.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries — Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany — announced a final comprehensive agreement on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions' relief.

Under US law, members of Congress have until September 17 to fully review the final nuclear deal with Iran and approve or reject it.
