On Thursday, Macedonia declared a state of emergency on the borders to tackle the inflow of migrants. The following day police used stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas against those migrants attempting to enter the country from Greece.

Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, as thousands of undocumented migrants, mostly from North Africa and the Middle East, are fleeing from their conflict-torn countries to find safety in the European Union.

According to UNHCR, more than 100,000 refugees have reached Greece by sea this year.

According to EU external border protection agency Frontex, the total number of refugees detected at bloc's borders between January and July 2015 stands at 340,000. According to the agency’s estimates, the amount of migrants is three times higher compared to the same period of 2014.
