The tensions between NATO and Russia have prompted Germany to alter its military strategy: from now on, the Bundeswehr will not discard weapons, as "deterrence may become important again", German TV-channel ARD reported.
The media outlet obtained a document composed by army command. It reads:
"From now on and until a further directive, it is prohibited to discard usable military equipment."
Therefore new Army Inspector Lieutenant General Jörg Vollmer has decided to make the German army more suited for the role as NATO's spearhead.
The primary reason for the change is the Ukrainian conflict and the exacerbation of relations between NATO and Russia as a result, according to the ARD.
The relations between NATO and Russia were severely damaged by the Ukrainian crisis and the West’s reluctance to recognize the Crimean referendum. NATO has been boosting its military presence along the Russian border, which Moscow views as a menace.
