"Two Resolute Support [NATO] service members died early this morning when two individuals wearing Afghan [military] uniforms opened fire on their vehicle at an [Afghan security forces] compound in Helmand province," a NATO statement said.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the assault, but NATO officials and Afghan authorities have repeatedly pointed the finger at the Taliban for staging such attacks.
The Wednesday assault is the first such attack since April 2015, when an American soldier was killed in a firefight between US and Afghan troops in eastern Afghanistan.
However, over 10,000 US military personnel remain in the country to train Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism operations as part of the Resolute Support mission.
At least six Resolute Support soldiers, including five US nationals, were killed in Afghanistan in 2015, according to the icasualties.org independent website, tracking casualties in the Afghanistan War and Iraq War.
